An explanation of metal stamping, bending and forming

With a broad range of different stamping presses, KeyTec offers high and low volume parts made by metal stamping, bending and forming. In order to provide more insight into these processes, a more detailed explanation will be given in this blog.

Metal stamping
First of all, metal stamping should be explained more thoroughly. The process of turning sheets of metal into a useful part or component is called sheet metal stamping. The metal is fed into a press, where the stamping tool, also known as a die, creates the desired shape. The die is pressed into or through the metal with tremendous force. The force used in the process is measured in tons. KeyTec offers stamping presses from 10 up to 250 ton, catering to a wide variety of demands. What is interesting about sheet metal stamping is that no heat is used. Instead, it is done with a cold-forming technique. Even though no heat is used, the part can come out hot because of the friction that is created between the metal and the die from the force of the press.

Metal bending
Let’s now explain the process of metal bending in more depth. Metal bending is a process by which metal can be shaped into a different form when applying force to the subject, which causes it to bend at an angle and form the desired shape, which often results in it being in a ‘V’ or a ‘U’ shape. In order to bend the metal, a press brake is used. This is a tool used in order to bend sheet metal which uses a punch and die to do this. Although press braking may seem straight forward, it can be quite difficult to remain accurate throughout the process. There are several types of press brakes which deliver different levels of force applied. KeyTec offers both excenter and hydraulic presses, both with different levels of force.

Metal forming
Last but not least, let’s discuss metal forming. Metal forming (or deep drawing) is the process of fashioning metal parts and objects through mechanical deformation. The metal is reshaped without adding or removing material, and its mass remains unchanged. In our previous blog, we provided an elaborate explanation of the process of metal forming.
